Dogs are capable of learning from an early age. The same way as a child, their cognitive capacities are always active, and their learning capabilities are sufficient to start training. But is there any particular starting age to train your dog?
Dogs start learning at the age of two to three weeks, They begin exploring their environment, and here they start learning their first lessons. they will try to communicate with their family, walking correctly and discover objects. It is at this stage that you should start giving them their first lessons.
Training and Education: what difference?
The training of your dog goes beyond his simple education. it consists of teaching him commands or reflexes, so that he can properly live in our society. Often he learns more complex behaviors than simple education, but the techniques used to perform the exercises are based on the same ethological principles.
Basically, we often confuse the two, with a tendency to speak of training when it comes to teaching the dog orders for work, and education when it comes to “know how to live” (cleanliness, sociability …). In practice, many owners talk about training to talk about their dog’s education.
Training starts from adoption:
We always talk or read dog training tips, when to start learning about hygiene, or some basic instructions for your dog, the most famous is to use a crate or even a newspaper and train your dog to go to the toilet.
This kind of technique is counter-productive, as it asks from your dog to learn something wich he would have to unlearn, because he will have to learn that it is ok to take it outside.
When training your dog, consistency must be respected, and this translates to fixing the rules and trying not to change them unless needed. As a consequence, it is more efficient to start training your puppy for adult life very progressively.
What differences for adult dogs?
Naturally, puppies are inquisitive and motivated, but also more excited and easily distracted than adults. Concentration and control of emotions are some traits that you have to accustom your dog to.
Back on the topic of hygiene, with a positive technique, cleanliness training can start in the first months, or even weeks. Same as humans, some dogs are smarter than others, so don’t expect the same results. You must also start paying attention to your dogs needs, wich can sometimes be overlooked, especially for senior dogs.
Puppies must also learn how to interact with other dogs, these lessons should start at a very young age in order to eliminate missbehavior when interacting with his kind.
Your dog must learn to recognize them, not be afraid of them, communicate and manage any dispute. These acquired behaviors are supposed to be natural when the puppy interacts with others, especially adult dogs. But it must not be overlooked, from the beginning, by letting him meet other dogs.
Don’t skimp on treats:
An important aspect of dog training is treats. Every effort made by your puppy must be rewarded. Either By a physical mean or a even just by talking to him.
In general, positive education with the proper encouragement will give you better results. Just avoid negative education as much as you can when it comes to your dog.
